Hardware encoding just got a whole lot faster—and affordable—for DVD authors

Hello all,

You’ve all got them—the endless shelves of dusty, bulky videotapes that take up precious studio space and seem to taunt you ever time you squeeze past them. But before you start encoding and burning to DVD , are you sure your authoring software is up to the task?

“The classic example of someone who gets ‘hornswaggled’ by the inexpensive lure of software-only encoding is someone who buys a piece of DVD authoring software, such as Apple DVD Studio Pro or Adobe Encore , and expects to process a large library of videotapes, only to find out that they need a capture solution, and that they have to capture it first before running it through a software encode,” says Bruce Nazarian, an award-winning DVD author and producer and president of Gnome Digital Media in Burbank. It’s a time-consuming and often unrewarding process, he adds.

Plextor introduces PX-716AL - slot-loaded DVD+/-R/RW drive

Hello all,

Plextor Corp., a leading developer and manufacturer of high-performance digital media equipment, today announced its first slot-loaded optical disk drive. The new PX-716AL DVD+/-R/RW and CD-R/RW drive allows users to insert disks directly into the device through a slot mechanism, eliminating the traditional slide-out tray. The drive is specifically designed for digital photo kiosks and other retail Point-of-Sale equipment, as well as media-centric computers intended for the living room.

The new PX-716AL drive meets several specific requirements of digital photo kiosk developers and OEMs. The 5.25-inch half-height design can be mounted vertically or horizontally to accommodate a wide range of kiosk designs. The drive accepts both 80mm and 120mm disk sizes, and provides a means to extract disks from the drive in the event of an equipment or power failure. In addition to high performance 6X DVD+/-R DL and 16x DVD+/-R recording, the PX-716AL also includes Intelligent Recording features that ensure reliable, high-quality results across a broad spectrum of CD and DVD media. The new drive is bundled with Easy Media Creator 7, Basic DVD Edition by Roxio®, a division of Sonic Solutions®.

"Development of a slot-loaded optical drive was based purely on customer demand for a Plextor solution suitable to kiosks," said Howard Wing, vice president of sales and marketing for Plextor. "While our slot-loaded drive is designed to be operated safely and securely in a retail environment, it also has all the advanced features and high quality that are the hallmarks of Plextor optical disk drives used by enterprises, professionals, and consumers around the globe."

"Roxio is extremely pleased that Plextor has bundled Easy Media Creator 7 with its new PX-716AL slot-loaded optical drive," said Stan Wong, vice-president of OEM sales for Roxio. "Plextor has long been a leader in the optical drive space and their innovative PX-716AL drive, when combined with Creator 7, provides consumers the ultimate hardware and software solution for burning their digital media to CD and DVD."

Check out the hidden feature on Beast Wars: Season 3

Hello all,

On Rhino Entertainment’s release of 'Beast Wars Transformers: The Complete Third Season' the studio has also added a small hidden feature. Though it is advertised on the packaging it is nonetheless pretty tricky to find if you don’t know where to look for it.

Insert the second disc of the DVD set and from the Main Menu go to the 'Episode Selections.' Once there, go through the screens until you hit the one for the last episode. Now press the forward button once again to get to another screen, which holds information about a short clip you will be about to see. It is an animatic sequence that was designed for the final episode of the season.

Hollywood directors nix Big Blue offer

Hello all,

Hollywood Entertainment's board of directors have unanimously rejected Blockbuster Video's hostile bid for the company and urged shareholders to vote in favor of the proposed merger with Movie Gallery.

In a letter to shareholders, the board said Thursday that the risk that Blockbuster won't be able to complete the transaction due to regulatory resistance outweighs the $1.25 per share premium offered above Movie Gallery's price.

Blockbuster launched its hostile bid Feb. 4, offering Hollywood shareholders $11.50 a share in cash, plus $3 a share in Blockbuster stock. Movie Gallery signed a definitive agreement last month to acquire Hollywood for $13.25 a share.

Happy Valentines Day...

Hello all,

Happy Valentines Day from the Cheap-DVDs-Advisor.com family.

Here's a neat little article I found for you...

"Well, another Valentine’s Day is upon us and a large majority of you, our dear readers, are going to snuggle up with your significant other to watch a DVD in the privacy of your own home...and hopefully for the sake of your neighbours with the shades drawn. But first you’ll head to the local video store or other favourite such establishment to select said DVD and here is where, according to my own, unscientific studies, 50% of all Valentine’s Day spats begin—selecting which movie to watch."

Price tag added to online music videos | CNET News.com

After years of reluctantly treating music videos as free promotional tools, record label Universal Music Group is planning to charge Internet and satellite companies whenever they play.

The change, which is likely to be followed by other record labels, marks a potentially substantial shift in the economics of the online-entertainment world. Some of the most popular entertainment services, such as Yahoo's Launch and the AOL Music service, are built around streaming millions of free videos a month to customers.

Plunging prices vex DVD-recorder makers

Once a leading earner that helped lift electronics manufacturers out of a period of financial stagnation, DVD recorders have degenerated into little more than a burden as the companies slog through a drawn-out price war.

The makers are in a cheerless predicament: They are unable to continue lowering prices because their thinning profit margins can't absorb it, and they can't realistically hope to benefit from raising prices in a market saturated with lower-priced goods.
