FVD DVD format formally debuts

Hello All,

On March 28, the Advanced Optical Storage Research Alliance (AOSRA) and the Opto-Electronics Systems Laboratories (OES) of the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) jointly presented FVD (forward versatile disc), Taiwan's self-developed red-ray high-definition DVD standard, with a product expected to be launched in a bundle with 10 FVD movie discs in the domestic retail market for around NT$5,500 (US$175) next month.
AOSRA, under the promotion by the FVD developer OES, is formed by 29 local companies engaged in production of optical discs, optical disc drives, consumer electronics, TV broadcast and distribution of movies.

FVD is competitive enough with HD-DVD in video quality but FVD products may be as much as ten times less expensive than similar HD-DVD models, OES general director Yung-sheng Liu claimed. FVD can attain definition of 1,920 x 1,080i and storage capacity of 5.4-6GB for single layer and 9.8-11GB for double layers on a single side, Liu said. The format adopts ASE (Advanced Encryption Standard) content protection system for copy right, Liu added.

Actima Technology and Idar Electronics are currently the only two AOSRA members making FVD players. However, some of AOSRA members, such as Tatung and Sampo, are willing to sell their HDTVs in bundle with FVD players and others plan to produce FVD-ROM (read only memory) drives for PCs and FVD recorders.

FVD was exhibited at the 2005 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas from 6-9 January and will also be displayed at the 2005 Comprehensive Electronics Show to take place in Taipei on 7-11 April as well as the 2005 Shanghai International Audio & Visual Exhibition in Shanghai, China, on 15-18 April, Huang indicated.

Rambo Animated Series Coming to DVD

Hello All,

Looks like Rambo is returning to the spotlight...at least with his old animated series. TV Shows on DVD reports:

Following the second film, and two years before a disappointing third theatrical installment, Ruby-Spears Productions launched a Rambo animated series that started with a 5-part mini-series in April 1986, and continued in daily syndication with 60 more episodes starting in mid-September of that year. A huge line of toys and videogames were marketed based on this series.

Taking over the role of Rambo was Neil Ross, a veteran voice actor with credits to his name that included Voltron, Transformers, G.I. Joe and InHumanoids. Other veteran voice actors were also in the cast, including other Transformers alumni: Peter Cullen, Frank Welker, Michael Bell, and Alan Oppenheimer (the latter also known as "Dr. Rudy Wells" in the Bionic television shows). Also present was Star Trek's "Kang", Michael Ansara, and Fresh Prince's "Uncle Phillip", James Avery.

Now the classic animated series comes to DVD on June 14th, in two separate volumes that each contain 11 episodes. The list of episodes wasn't available yet, but Rambo - Volume 1: A World of Trouble and Rambo - Volume 2: Enter The Dragon will each contain approximately 300 minutes of show for just $14.98 SRP per release.

DVD produced to help parents educate children about sex

Hello All,

Here's a interesting bit of news for you moms and dads.

The Crisis Pregnancy Agency has produced a new DVD to help parents educate their children about sex.

The agency said research had found that young Irish people had serious gaps in their knowledge of sex, leaving them vulnerable to unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases.

It said parents needed to speak to their children about the matter at regular intervals in their lives, beginning when they are young.

DVD Showed GIs Beating Iraqis...

Hello All,

Here's a disturbing story for ya. It shows the reality of our war and what it can do to a persons mindset.

In a twist on the photography that inflamed the Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal, a separate group of U.S. soldiers in Iraq shot a video of themselves beating prisoners and using the hand of a dead Iraqi to "wave hello," according to documents released Friday.

The DVD, which soldiers derisively titled "Ramadi Madness" in reference to a turbulent city in Iraq's Sunni Triangle, prompted an internal Army investigation of the Florida National Guard troops from West Palm Beach who were involved. The video was brought to the attention of Army supervisors by a civilian public affairs employee in Florida who expressed disgust after viewing the scenes of soldiers reveling among beaten and dead Iraqi combatants.
