Prediction: HD-DVD doomed, Blu-Ray to win

The Blu-ray format is going to win the standards war for next-generation disc-based media storage, at least that’s what Ars Technica is predicting, somewhat convincingly.

In the last couple of weeks, several high-profile companies have announced that they’ll be supporting Sony’s Blu-ray over Toshiba’s competing HD DVD. We covered the 20th Century Fox announcement of Blu-ray support, but now Universal Music Group, and Lions Gate Home Entertainment have signed on in support of the format as well.

Paramount Pictures appears to be wavering in their support of HD DVD while NBC Universal is also waffling a bit. Is Xbox 360 with Blu-ray support far behind? Yes. Far, far behind. You can bet Microsoft will be the last to drop support of HD DVD if the battle should swing decisively in Blu-ray’s favor.
