Cheap DVDs - Opinion: Kazaa settlement is morally wrong

Cheap DVDs - Retailers Criticize High-Def Launch

While Blu-ray and HD DVD duke it out for market supremacy, retailers took the backers of both formats to task for weak early sales during a discussion Tuesday at the annual DisplaySearch HDTV conference.

Most of the panel of traditional storefront retailers called the Blu-ray and HD DVD launch a "disappointment," citing limited hardware availability and technological glitches as the key culprits, and placing the blame squarely at the feet of the manufacturers and studios behind the next-gen formats.

"Everything was too rushed," said David Workman, executive director of the retailer organization Pro Buying Group. "It was almost a race to string the tightest noose and, unfortunately, we are left as retailers to take consumers and guide them through this land mine and hopefully no one’s feet will get blown off."

Cheap DVDs - Opinion: Kazaa settlement is morally wrong

Cheap DVDs - Opinion: Kazaa settlement is morally wrong

Ray Beckerman used our news submit to tell us: "I have seen reports that Kazaa has entered into a settlement with the RIAA, under which it will seek to sell "licensed" RIAA music throught p2p technology. The terms of the settlement have not been disclosed. I am assuming that the settlement does not in any way affect the thousands of lawsuits against Kazaa customers.

If that is so, it"s wrong. Many of the fine people who are being terrorized by the RIAA are in this mess because of Kazaa, and a settlement which gets Kazaa off the hook with the RIAA but doesn't do anything for the good folks who took Kazaa at its word, is not something I find comforting in the least.

Cheap DVDs - Download, Burn, Almost Play (That) DVD

Cheap DVDs - Download, Burn, Almost Play (That) DVD

Hollywood, somehow cannot get its head out of its asinus, and then blames people for swapping movies online. The latest example of this bone headed behavior comes via Movielink and Cinema Now.

Major studios are now offering movies on these services for downloading and burning on a DVD - which is good move only if you ignore the fine print. The movies you download can be burnt on a DVD but will play back only on your PC, but not on your DVD players. What! Crazy!

For the (in)convenience of the downloads on Movielink (jointly owned by the studios, of course), you have to shell out more cash than you do physical DVDs. At least Cinema Now is trying to keep prices reasonable. Oh by the way it will take between one to two hours to download the movies. Think about it this way, this might force people to upgrade to higher speeds, and perhaps switch from slower DSL plans to cable company offerings!

Warner will follow those up with 17 other titles, including Batman Begins, Constantine, Training Day and The Matrix.

Sony Corp., the world's second-biggest consumer electronics maker, will begin selling its first Blu-ray high-definition DVD player in July US,000. Also, Sony's "50 First Dates" and "Hitch” will be included with the player. The Sony player will support a video output at 1,080 lines of resolution and progressive scanning, the company said in a statement.

However, Sony will be two months behind Samsung which plans to put a Blu-ray Disc player on sale in April. But speculations are that a similar delay could hit Samsung’s April launch plans since the earliest Blu-ray Disc content announced to-date is set to go on sale on May 23.

Prediction: HD-DVD doomed, Blu-Ray to win

The Blu-ray format is going to win the standards war for next-generation disc-based media storage, at least that’s what Ars Technica is predicting, somewhat convincingly.

In the last couple of weeks, several high-profile companies have announced that they’ll be supporting Sony’s Blu-ray over Toshiba’s competing HD DVD. We covered the 20th Century Fox announcement of Blu-ray support, but now Universal Music Group, and Lions Gate Home Entertainment have signed on in support of the format as well.

Paramount Pictures appears to be wavering in their support of HD DVD while NBC Universal is also waffling a bit. Is Xbox 360 with Blu-ray support far behind? Yes. Far, far behind. You can bet Microsoft will be the last to drop support of HD DVD if the battle should swing decisively in Blu-ray’s favor.
